On Monday Feb. 8, Be the Change will hold a marijuana forum for all students interested in learning about the use of marijuana and how it effects the school.

“The idea came out of a meeting that we had with the Be the Change students. We look at all the issues at the school and things that are troubling them, so the idea came from the students who wanted to do something about the issue of marijuana,” Sandy Schilling-Gal, Be the Change sponsor, said.

The forum is an intense discussion between students about marijuana use in their school and community. The event is sponsored by The National Coalition Against Drug Abuse (NCADA), Be the Change and the Rockwood Drug Free Coalition.

“[Members of Be The Change] knew there were athletes, musicians, and people who participate in other activities who do marijuana. The Be the Change students were concerned that these students didn’t have the proper education since the D.A.R.E. program in middle school,” Schilling-Gal said.

There will be two different sessions on Feb. 8. The first session will be during 1st and 2nd Hour. The session will have games and leaders will try to  get kids to open up, share and look at opinions on marijuana from different perspectives.

The second session will be during 3rd and 4th Hour. It will involve topics related to the use of marijuana in school and the community. The students will talk about these topics and try to find a consensus of what the school thinks about marijuana.

There will also be a NCADA representative present who will give the students any factual information they want to know. The representative is also a member of the Rockwood Drug Free Coalition.
“We’re expecting a big turnout, maybe 30 or 40 students,” Nini Montgomery, junior and Be the Change leader, said.
The Be The Change leaders said that they know that not all students stay drug free, but they want students to be informed about marijuana and what it does to the body.
Registration with parent permission is required to attend. Registration forms are in the Senior Office and are available during lunch.
