Social Studies teacher Steve Klawiter will have his AP World History class take the digital exam this May. He said he looks forward to seeing how his students will perform on the exam. “Its been very clear theyre moving towards digital. Since the pandemic started, theyve been putting the pieces in place to go digital, Klawiter said. “I think that ultimately it’s going to be more beneficial because with systems like Canvas and Google Classroom, students are used to more digital activities and less handwriting activities.”

Rockwood School District is currently writing a curriculum for a new womens history course, which will be offered in the 2025-2026 school year. Social studies teacher Jodie Lee will teach it at LHS.

On March 13, the Presidents Forum hosted a “Meet The Candidates” event at the Rockwood School District Administrative Annex. A student from each of Rockwood’s four high schools was chosen to ask candidates three questions and more questions were asked from anonymous PTO members.

Adolescent rates of problem gambling behaviors are double that of adult rates. Cait Huble, Director of Communications at the National Council on Problem Gambling said that this increase could be caused by online games which have blurred the lines between gaming and gambling.

What’s a Lancer?
In a routine based off of the Hindu gods Krishna and Radha, sophomore Hritika Malugu and Brentwood High School freshman Meenakshi Kadungath strike a pose. Malugus favorite routine is also based off of Krishna. My favorite dance piece is probably Asainthadum which is a classical piece about how everyone is happy when Krishna is around. It’s really dynamic and has a lot of fun steps, Malugu said.

Sophmore Halah Almuttan started her buisness, Halah’s Sweet Treats during fall this year. Other than selling a variety of self-made goods such as cinamon rolls, bunt cakes and churros, she also takes custom orders for treats like cakes, chocolate covered strawberries and cupcakes.

At Barnes & Noble, senior Vedika Kumar participated in Blind Date with a Book. During this event, books are wrapped in paper with descriptive words that give a hint about the novel, and individuals are free to choose which one they want to buy.

After finishing their tests in history teacher Steve Klawiters class, students can participate in an optional trivia section. While Klawiter usually doesnt offer rewards for the highest score on the trivia section, it offers a way for students to decompress after unit tests.
History teacher provides de-stressing activities to students
Freshman Emi Limon competes in the 2022 World Kickboxing and Karate Union Championship in Wales. Even though Limon has only been doing karate for three years, he won four medals at the October competition— a gold medals in Weapons with Music and Korean Forms, a silver medal in Hardstyle Forms and a bronze medal in Weapons with no Music.

Revised 2024-2025 calendar sets 1st Semester to end before winter break

The new calendar change approved by the Board of Education will let students finish their finals before Winter Break.

At the Board of Education meeting Dec. 7, board members approved the revised 2024-2025 district calendar and the new 2025-2026 calendar. 

The changes being made affect semester start and end dates. 

Currently, in the 2023-2024 calendar, the end of 1st Semester is Jan. 11, meaning finals week is scheduled after winter break.

However, starting next year, finals week will be before break. 

Chief Communications Officer Mary Lapak said that this change will allow students and staff to relax over winter break without worrying about tests and grades. 

“This change was made so that students and staff could have a true break and students would not have to worry about studying for finals over Winter Break. You will see that reflected in the 2025-2026 Academic Calendar that the Board also approved on Dec. 7,” Lapak said. 

The change will mean that the number of days in each semester for the 2024-2025 school year will be uneven. 1st Semester will have 83 days while 2nd Semester will have 93 days.

For the 2024-2025 school year, the end of 1st Semester will be Dec. 19, and the start of 2nd Semester will be Jan. 2. 

For the 2025-2026 school year, the end of 1st Semester will be Dec. 19, and the start of 2nd Semester will be Jan. 6.

After downloading the Here Comes the Bus app, parents can create an account for students with a Rockwood-specific code. Initially, the code will be available for 14 Rockwood buses. We felt it would provide another layer of convenience, communication and security for our students and families,” Mike Heyman, Rockwood’s Director of Transportation, said.

During 2023s Trivia Night, senior Kyle Schwallie was gifted a Dairy Queen Certificate since it was his birthday. The theme for the night in 2023 was Hollywood, and this years theme is Time Warp Trivia.

To wrap up his time at Lafayette, Assistant Principal Timothy Jones took over the Class of 2024 and helped them through their last year of high school.

After their first night in America, French exchange students Elisa Levesque, Tessa Polano, Olivia Fontenit, Noé Kelkou and Lilia Boulvais line up in the hotel lobby. The exchange students stayed in a hotel after their Friday evening flight, they then met with their hosts Saturday morning.

In order to meet Federal Student Aid application deadlines, many local resources, including Lafayette counselors, are available for one-on-one meetings. Even if you think your college is paid for, we still heavily recommend going ahead and filing the FAFSA so that you dont lose out on any opportunities, College and Career counselor Alex Dusenberry said. A lot of four year universities say you can only get scholarships if you complete the FASFA. [Also], it is a requirement that you complete the FSA in order to get A+ credit.
