Weekly sports update: Sept. 16-Sept. 22

Boys Cross Country: Lafayette participated in the Paul Enke Invitational at Sioux Passage on Sept. 21, placing third out of 12 teams. Sophomore Nikolas Malek placed second in the event, senior Aiden Murphy placed fourth and junior Eric Reed placed tenth. Their next race is the Dale Shepherd Invitational, which will take place on Oct. 5.

Boys Soccer: The team played three games this week, and they won each one. First, they played Parkway South on Sept. 17 and beat them 2-1. Next, they played Mehlville on Sept. 19 and won 2-1 in overtime. The next day, on Sept. 20, the Lancers played Oakville and shut them out 2-0. Kaden Karr led the team this week with three goals, but fellow teammate Sam Manson had two, and Ryan Schneider had one.

Boys Swimming and Diving: On Sept. 19, the Lancers played against Ladue and Chaminade. In the game against Ladue, they lost 149-129, and in the game against Chaminade, they lost 155-126. Next week, on Sept. 24, they’ll face both SLUH and Oakville in the Lafayette pool at 4:30 p.m. They’ll also face long-time rival Marquette on Sept. 26, also at 4:30 p.m.

Field Hockey: The team played three games this week. In their first game against John Burroughs on Sept. 17, they lost 3-0. Next, they played Marquette on Sept. 19, they won a close match 2-1. Then, on Sept. 21, they played against Kirkwood, shutting them out in a 3-0 win. Junior Mia Simpson and freshman Lene Rossouw rank 4th and 6th for the best scorers in the St. Louis area.

Football: In the annual Battle of 109, the Lancers fell to Eureka in a close game, the final score being 24-22. Senior Caden Phipps ran in Lafayette’s three touchdowns and had over 200 rushing yards. In the eleven years since the first Battle of 109, Eureka is leading Lafayette 11-6. The Lancer’s next game will be at Northwest Cedar Hill on Sept. 27, with kickoff being set for 7 p.m.

Girls Cross Country: The team placed second at out 12 teams in the Paul Enke Invitational. Freshman Grace Tyson took first in the race, with a time of 20:30, and junior Hope Ware placed 11th with a time of 22:07. Their next race is the Dale Shepherd Invitational, which will take place on Oct. 5.

Girls Golf: The Lady Lancers faced off against Seckman on Sept. 16, and won the match 172-211, their best score of the season. Next, on Sept. 18, the team took place in the Ladue Invitational, placing second out of 13 teams. Brooke Bierman (66) and Caitlin Przybylski (81) both had their career bests at Lafayette. In their last match of the week, on Sept. 19, the Lady Lancers fell against opponent Rockwood Summit by three points. Next week, they will play two matches. One against Marquette on Sept. 24 at Forest Hills at 3:45 p.m, and they will participate in the Farmington Match Play Tournament at 8 a.m on Sept. 25.

Girls Tennis: The team split in two at the Parkway Central Invite, Lafayette Team One, made up of five varsity players, won the tournament. Lafayette Team Two, made up of five other varsity players placed second after beating both Marquette and Parkway Central’s teams. The Lady Lancers play at Parkway South on Sept. 23, at home against Westminster on Sept. 24, and then have two consecutive home games on Sept. 26 and Sept. 27 against Parkway Central and St. Joseph’s respectively.

Girls Volleyball: The Lady Lancers won both of their games this week. In their first against Webster Groves on Sept. 17, they won in two sets. They played at Lindbergh on Sept. 19 and also won in two sets. On Sept. 21, they played in the tournament of champions, hosted at rival high school, St. Joseph’s. They lost their first game against Cor Jesu in three sets, but fought their way back to the championship match by beating Francis Howell, Borgia, and Althoff, all in two matches apiece. However, they lost in the championship game against Briarcrest Christian by two sets. In the upcoming week, the Lady Lancers will play at Cor Jesu on Sept. 24 at 6 p.m, and then face Mehlville at home on Sept. 26 at 5:30 p.m.

Softball: On Sept. 16-Sept. 18, the team participated in the annual Suburban Showdown at Kirkwood Athletic Association. In their first two games on Sept. 16, they lost against Wentzville Holt 3-1, and then lost against Kirkwood 11-7. Then they played two games on Sept. 18. In the first, they lost against Fox 4-2, but won the second won against Lindbergh 11-7 with the difference being a home-run from junior Landee Wasson and a grand-slam from junior Kate Sommer. In their final game of the week, they mercied Parkway North 16-3, with Wasson hitting her second home-run of the week. On Sept. 23, they will play at Fort Zumwalt South, and on Sept. 24, they will play against St. Joseph at home at 4:30 p.m.
