Last Saturday, Feb. 20, The Student Council sponsored  Winter Formal. The theme inside was appropriate for the season even though the warm temperatures outside were setting records.

There were around 500 students attending the dance. That was only slightly fewer tickets sold than last year.

Since the recent idea, in 2015, to make the week before the dance a dress up week much like Homecoming, which STUCO says helps to promote the dance, and get the word out.

Before 2015, the Winter Dance was actually a Turnabout Dance.

The dance theme this year was Frosted Formal. This theme was voted on by followers of the STUCO twitter. This new touch made it easier to give the students what they want, so that the dance chairs could make the dance as enjoyable as possible for everyone there.

Most of the decorations were winter themed. They included giant snowflakes and white lanterns and the addition of a photo booth.

Junior dance chair, Kendall Goedeke, was able to design and order the decorations to help prepare her for next year’s Homecoming responsibilities that she will have.

“I definitely think that planning Winter Formal is going to help me with Homecoming next year because I kinda get an idea for what it’s like to plan a big dance, but not on as large of a scale. I think going through that process and learning from Allison Hallums will help me for next year,”  Goedeke said.

At the dance, the main excitement surrounded the crowning of the queen and king.

Voted on earlier that week the final nominations for court were London Smith and Scott Tholke for the sophomores. Peyton Boyd, Aaron Hoyt and Kenzie Hall were the juniors nominated. The seniors included Kelsey Baich, Karen Farmer, Payal Hukeri and Michaela Rogan and  for the girls. The boys nominated were Greg Corkal, True Morse, Chris O’Connor and Austin Stoecker.

Morse and Farmer were named King and Queen at the dance.

Farmer said, “I was very surprised because I felt like I shouldn’t have won. I didn’t really know that many people liked me.”
