Girls basketball to host Girls Love Hoops Night

On Feb. 7, the girl’s basketball team will host Marquette for Senior Night. That’s not the only thing special about Feb. 7, as the team is also hosting the first annual Girls Love Hoops Night.
The event was created by Head Coach Denise Meyer to encourage youth involvement with the high school team and to get girls excited to play basketball at the next level.
“Girls Love Hoops Night was created to celebrate all girls who love to play the game of basketball,” Meyer said.
The young girls that go to the game in a basketball uniform will receive free admission, a bag of popcorn, a soda and a meet and greet with the team. The girls also have the opportunity to compete in halftime games along with a mini basketball and t-shirt giveaway.
“We wanted to include as many young girls within the community that we could,” Meyer said. “Marquette has a lot of young girls who play basketball, and if we came together, then we could have all kinds of kids from the Lafayette attendance area and the Marquette attendance area and even beyond that. It will boost attendance and bring more attention to the friendly rivalry that we have.”

The game is also an opportunity for the team’s influence to grow within the community and inspire the next generation of Lady Lancers.
“I think the atmosphere we get to play in will be so positive and energetic knowing young players and even future Lady Lancers will be in attendance,” senior point guard Sydnie Wolf said. “Knowing that we get to set the tone for future Lafayette teams is exciting, and I think it gives all the younger girls a chance to see what the expectations of a super competitive game are like. I’m so excited to see the girls in attendance because I know what it was like in their shoes watching the ‘big kids’ when I was younger.”
Wolf hopes to get the win in one of her last home games of her high school career.
“I think the game will be physical, competitive and Marquette will definitely look to push in transition, but with our defensive effort and offensive patience, I have confidence in [my team],” Wolf said.
