Joseph Gutowski, orchestra teacher, has won the Saint Louis Suburban Music Educators Association (SLSMEA) Merit Award.

SLSMEA is an organization for music teachers and give the award to staff members who have made significant contributions to the All-Suburban orchestra.

Gutowski is proud of his involvement in the All-Suburban orchestra.

He helped streamline the audition process for the orchestra, as well as mentor new teachers.  Gutowski improved the online registration process for the All Suburban orchestra.

Gutowski also computerized the old system of scoring for everyone who runs the All Suburban orchestra, so it takes hours less than it would normally take.

“I revolutionized the All Suburban scoring system,” Gutowski said.

When asked about his reaction to receiving the award, Gutowski said he was completely surprised.  Gutowski said that he was not expecting to be given the award but was happy he won it.

Gutowski has worked in the Rockwood School District for eight years and conducts the Chamber, Concert and Symphonic orchestras. He also helps mentor middle school students.
