U.S. forces kill Osama bin Laden in Pakistan

Late on Sunday, May 1, President Barack Obama addressed the nation to confirm the news that had been circulating through various forms of media all day: Osama bin Laden, the mastermind behind the 9/11 terrorist attacks had been killed in a raid in Pakistan.

According to releases from the Department of Defense, the raid occurred May 1 in the Pakistani town of Abbottabad, which is just a few hours north of the capital, Islamabad.

Many of the details remain hazy, but it has been released that a team of Navy SEALs (Sea, Air and Land) and CIA operatives landed inside the bin Laden compound in two helicopters.

They ended up leaving the complex in only one; the second crashed due to mechanical malfunctions and was destroyed.

No American casualties were reported, according to CNN, but four armed men, including bin Laden, were killed, along with one woman that he was apparently using as a human shield.

Celebrations erupted across the nation, with groups gathering in various locations including the White House and New York’s Time Square to celebrate the victory for America.

The War on Terror is far from over and according to the CIA and other intelligence sources, Al Qaeda doesn’t have the funds to achieve an attack on the scale of the one on 9/11.  But, Americans abroad and at U.S. embassies will still be at a greater risk in the coming days and weeks.

To reduce the chances of Islamic backlash from a less extreme level, the United States adhered to strict Islamic burial rituals while disposing of the body in the sea to avoid the chances of martyr attacks around his burial site.

In Obama’s addresas to the nation concerning the death of bin Laden he said, “Justice has been done.”
