Fashion soothes the soul

This is a stressful time for all of us, with the PSAT, college applications and the ever-persistent homework coming our way.  Worry over impending tests, deadlines and the numerous other troubles that affect high school students often consumes our every thought and action.

It is my goal that this blog will offer a brief escape from all of our demanding schedules, including mine. With that in mind, please enjoy this blog, and know that nothing is ever as bad as you fashion it to be. Speaking of which…

Fur, feathers, sequins, ruffles, lace and leather. They can all seem a little frightening sometimes, right?  Well, don’t count them out just yet.

Color was key last year, simplicity reigned the year before that, this year TEXTURE definitely takes the cake.  A velvet blazer, a fur collar, a sparkly T-shirt or a feather vest will earn well deserved applause this fall.

Go for sophistication when assembling outfits with such items, and certainly don’t include all of these textures in one.

A truly great statement piece is one that is versatile and practicable.  Do not waste your money on something that can be worn with only one particular outfit or that is simply too radical for school.

However, that’s not to say that you shouldn’t take risks.

Yes, buy that ruffled skirt that you had your eye on and pair it with some hot pink heels and sleek black blazer. Texture, color, sophistication equals stylistic success!

And if you’re feeling really adventurous, you could even try to pair two of said textures together, as long as one is noticeably less dramatic than the other.  For instance, you could pair a simple, silver sequin top with a lacey orange skirt. Just use your discretion, and make sure that your outfit always includes a few modest basics.

Most important, let your outfit be a reflection of both your unique personality and your remarkable aspirations. If you’re an audacious future businesswoman, pull on a sharp pencil skirt, some suede heels and a metallic top for some flair. If you’re a laid-back journalist with a creative spark, then put on some comfy jeans, oxford shoes, a cardigan and a T-shirt with just a hint of color and sparkle.

Do not follow fashion trends exactly as you see them in magazines; there is always a way to adapt the latest styles to suit your individual personality and lifestyle. Go with what works and what makes you happy and leave everything else to the runway.

Have fun, be bold, and continue looking ahead.
