AP Art Show to be held May 7 at LHS

On Thursday, May 7, Advanced Placement (AP) Art Studio will be hosting an art show at LHS. Students are able to combine their art work from the 2014-2015 school year and display it for friends, family and peers. Each student is required to submit at least 10 pieces.

In AP Art Studio, students have assignments that fall under the concentration category. Concentrations vary greatly depending on the individual students interests. For example, senior Mandy McCarthy centers concentration pieces around weather, and senior Clayton Peel chose to model his concentration after a comic book, Anchor.

When students create artwork that isn’t required to follow their concentration, students often choose not to, but senior Megan Hardie has attempted to keep her pieces consistent and displays her concentration, birds, in almost every piece.

“It’s a compilation of my entire year’s work. I’ve been able to experiment with my different interests and looking into my concentration, so this show is basically a display of my entire year’s experience and all the people here put into drawings,” Hardie said.

Other students are getting excited about this show but for different reasons.

“My sketchbook was seen as “too vulgar” to be put in the all district art show, but I can put it in this art show. I just have to put a disclaimer on it. I’m happy I get to show it now because it shows process,” Peel said.

Art Department Chair Lauren Sakowski has been hosting the AP Art Show for four years now.

“I’m absolutely proud of the work that they’ve done. The best thing about the AP Art Show is that we are past the AP exam and turning in their digital portfolios, and now they can finally sit back, have all their work up, enjoy celebrating the end of the year and showcase their work to their families and friends,” Sakowski said.
