Banned books week publicizes challenged, banned literary works in schools

Alaina Strollo, Asst. Webmaster

Banned Books Week, endorsed by the American Library Association, publicizes all the literary classics challenged or banned by schools for a plethora of reasons; the main one being that schools found the work inappropriate for educational purposes. The banning of books only affects schools that choose to remove that work from their shelves.

In lieu of Banned Book Week, LHS Library staff has created signs, displays, and trivia for self-directed bingo. Their goal is to sign students up for library cards through the St. Louis Public Library for free literary access. If students sign up for a card or bring their SLPL cards, they will be entered into a contest for a prize.

Lafayette staff has chosen different novels read in their classes or free time to defend the work and justify its value in the educational system.
