Every year, I Love to Write Day falls on Nov. 15, celebrating writing as a piece of human life and self-expression. For some students, writing is an important part of their life.

When writing stories, senior Ava Austriaco focuses on the fantasy genre, but her main focus is on music. She writes songs for her band, Platonic Lovers.

“When it comes to music, I’d like to make that a career; writing songs that tell feelings,” Austriaco said.

She has written over 60 songs, three of which have been published.

Sophomore Eshwar Murali likes to write commentary on existing pieces of work, as well as social commentary pieces.

“Whether it be a review on the Emoji Movie or social commentary, I like to write about big and small things and try to connect them to the larger meaning,” Murali said. “Writing about other things and the perspective I get from those sources is interesting. It lets me express my voice and opinions.”

Murali’s creativity is fueled by an abundance of random thoughts, and he uses writing as an outlet to focus his ideas.

“I like to ramble a lot, as my parents can attest to, and writing helps me let those rambles become articulated ideas,” Murali said. “Writing helps me transform the random thoughts in my head into something tangible and something meaningful.”

Murali views writing as a form of communication, expressing thoughts and feelings that may be otherwise difficult to convey.

“Writing is my favorite way of communication. Humans are social creatures and that means a cornerstone of our nature is to communicate with others. I find that writing fills this role perfectly. Writing allows people to express thoughts and emotions to others in an accessible medium,” Murali said.

Senior Caitlyn Hern likes to write about fantasy and action, and she hopes to publish her work when she‘s older.

“I like to mix superheroes into the real world and kind of combine them,” Hern said. “[Writing] helps me get out all the ideas I have and just put them on paper,” Hern said.

Hern sees writing as a way to create something unique and unlike what anyone else would write.

“I’ve kind of realized that whatever you write, nobody will ever write the same way as you do, and they won’t write what you would,” Hern said. “You can add all your own taste and touches and stuff, which I think is what a lot of people have done.”
