Newcomer rates kayaking as favorite outdoor activity

For freshman Cathleen Newcomer, spending a weekend camping is nothing out of the ordinary.

Newcomer is a member of Venturing Crew, a group of students that organizes and participates in outdoor activities. Past events have included plenty of hikes and camping, rock climbing and kayaking, which has been Newcomer’s favorite event so far.

When Newcomer’s mother began getting the Venturing Crew organized, she had her daughter come to the meetings. Newcomer has stuck with it ever since.

Two weeks ago, she was elected as the crew’s new president.

“I’m going to have to run meetings now,” Newcomer said.

“[My favorite part of Venturing Crew] is hanging out with my friends,” Newcomer said. “Basically all of my friends are in it.”

Venturing Crew has also developed more than just Newcomer’s camping skills.

“I’m a better leader…and I don’t have problems standing in front of people and talking anymore,” Newcomer said.
