How to avoid and treat sunburns

Now that the summer months are upon us, many will find themselves spending more and more time in the great outdoors. Taking the following steps will ensure that you can enjoy your time outside while avoiding the pain that comes with lack of protection from the sun.

  1. Always use sunscreen when spending time outside. Even as little as ten minutes will affect your skin. Reapply sunscreen every two hours, especially if you’ll be in the pool. Don’t be fooled; you can burn at any time, no matter how cloudy it is outside.
  2. Many don’t realize how easily even your eyes and eyelids can be sun burnt, and how extremely painful that can be.  Wear sunglasses; your health and well-being are worth the raccoon eyes that ay result.
  3. When sitting out in the open in the sun, whether you are lifeguarding or maybe watching a soccer game, stay covered up.  Umbrellas will shade you and serve as a shield from the sun.

In the unfortunate event that you do get burnt, the following are steps to take that may ease the pain.

  1. Moisturize sunburns frequently with lotion. This will help to reduce the frequency of peeling.
  2. Aloe Vera is very useful when it comes to sun burns; it will soothe, moisturize and soften the skin.
  3. Avoid the sun if you can, but if you must be outdoors, cover up!  In addition to wearing plenty of sunscreen, wear protective clothing. This means you might even have to wear a t-shirt in the pool.
