At the Freshman Orientation on Aug. 19, 2021, Class of of 2025 members were required to wear masks as they learned about the school. The mask mandate has been in place for a year since the return to school on Nov. 12, 2020, following the COVID-19 outbreak. There was a short break from the mandate in the summer of 2021 when infection numbers in the area dropped significantly.

All Boys Aren't Blue, Crank, Gender Queer, Looking for Alaska, The Haters and Where I End And You Begin are books that were recently challenged in the Rockwood School District, with all six books decided to be retained without restriction. Objections to most of the books centered around language and content that critics considered inappropriate. Multiple parents spoke out against these books during recent Board of Education (BOE) meetings on Oct. 21 and Nov. 18 at Crestview Middle School and Eureka High School.

"I would follow all the COVID-19 protocols, from the CDC, etc. Maybe not forced, but highly recommended that people get the COVID-19 vaccine," senior Evan Brotherton said.

"It should be mandatory to wear masks, even if you're in the gym doing gym class, I think you should wear your mask. I mean, obviously we don't want to shut down the school since for seniors it's their last year and incoming freshmen who haven't been here yet. I think what we can do to reduce the risk of COVID-19 in schools is to wear your mask and to be conscientious, and teachers really need to enforce this. Other students may not agree with it but teachers need to be doing it," senior Elena Mendoza said.

"Masks will be required of course. Make sure people are socially distancing to the best of their abilities so we don't spread COVID-19 in our schools. Make sure they are wearing masks properly, not like under the nose, you know. And just making sure kids are really taking it seriously, you know, cause it's not a joke, at all. This is real life. They need to take it more seriously than they are right now. Just being more mature and getting them in the right mind set," senior Zakee Branch said.

"Obviously keeping the distance of desks between other students, keeping mask regulations within the county, and following all of whatever we end up needing to do on a daily basis," senior Alex Wildt said.

"I’m very willing to wear masks if it will make everything more normal. I think it's really just your own opinion, everyone has their own opinions; if you want to wear a mask, wear a mask. If you don't, don't wear a mask," senior Piper Keim said.
