CPR training going into effect for current seniors

In previous years at Lafayette, CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) was not required in order to graduate.

For the 2017-18 school year, students are required to perform CPR training or they will not be eligible for graduation.

In 2016, Senate Bill No. 711 was passed stating, “For the school year 2017-18 and each school year thereafter, upon graduation from high school pupils in public schools and charter schools shall have received thirty minutes of CPR instruction and training in the proper performance of the Heimlich maneuver, or other first aid for choking given any time during a pupil’s four years of high school.”

With this law, seniors who have not taken health in Rockwood will be given a date and time where they will be trained.

“Currently we have about 50 seniors who did not take health at Lafayette. We will be making accommodations for these seniors to be trained prior to graduation,” physical education department chair Denise Meyer said.

The training will be taught at Lafayette sometime during the school day. However, specific dates and times have not yet been announced.

Watch for updates to find out when the dates and times will be given.
