Senior forward Jacob Basom scored the go-ahead goal for the Lafayette hockey team to secure a 5-3 win over Eureka at Kennedy Recreation Complex on Saturday, Nov. 16.
The Battle of 109 was a close game with both teams having many scoring opportunities. The Lancers struck first, scoring a goal with 6 minutes left in the first period, to make the score 1-0.
The Lancers fended off the Wildcats but were met with an unexpected breakaway in the second period which resulted in a game-tying goal. Eureka then scored another within minutes, but it was disallowed.
The game started to heat up in the third period. In the first minute, senior forward Matt Ridgeway scored a goal to give the Lancers a 2-1 lead. The Wildcats pounced back with 2 goals, one right after the other, to pull them ahead with a score of 3-2.
However, Ridgeway found the back of the net again to level the game, 3-3. Basom makes the score 4-3, minutes after Ridgeway’s tying goal.
Senior forward Alem Garibovic scored with 50 seconds left in the game, to make the score 5-3 and cement the Lancer’s third win of the season.
Lafayette (3-2) stands at 3rd place in the Suburban rankings and will face Oakville (3-2) at 8:20pm on Friday, Nov. 16 as they continue through the regular season.
