On a break away, freshman forward Mason Steinbruegge finds sophomore forward Quinn Thomas who slots it past the Clayton goalkeeper extending the Lafayette hockey team’s lead to 4-1, Tuesday Feb. 17.
Thomas’s goal came early in the third period, and helped the Lancers coast to a 6-1 win over the Greyhounds during the quarter-finals series of the Wickenheieser Cup.
Lafayette jumped to a quick, 3-0, lead in the first period, after sophomore forward Luke Ross scored all three goals, claiming a hattrick.
Clayton responded early in the second period, when they scored a goal to make the score, 3-1.
From there the Lancers offense took over, taking 10 shots, compared to just four shots by the Greyhounds. Despite this, Lafayette failed to add to their lead.
Four minutes into the third period, Ross was ejected from the game after receiving a head contact penalty.
Less than a minute later, Thomas scored his goal, despite Lafayette playing a man down, to crush any momentum that Clayton may have gained from the penalty.
The Lancers scored two more goals to end the game. The Greyhounds tried to comeback, taking 12 shots in the final period of the game. But they were unable to break through freshman goalkeeper Peter Tomaras and the Lafayette defense.
The following day, Wednesday Feb. 18, the two teams played again, and ended up tying, 3-3. Despite the draw, Lafayette will move on to the semi-finals of the Wickenheieser Cup and face Rockwood Summit at the Centene Community Ice Center, on Friday, Feb. 20, and Saturday, Feb. 21.
Following the two-game series with the Greyhounds, the Lancers are now on a 12 unbeaten streak, having not lost a game since Dec. 27. They have gone 10-0-2 during that stretch, and are now three games away from winning the Wickenheieser Cup.

[Families] actually having the opportunity to have their kids on the field with us is the most important aspect,” Ben Lundt said.](https://lancerfeed.press/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/IMG_6823-1200x800.jpg)
