Boys and girls basketball win close games against Seckman to start the season

Girls basketball open the season with a close road win

With the Seckman crowd booing her to miss, sophomore guard Jasmyn Callaham made four straight free throws late in the fourth quarter to help the Lafayette girls basketball team grab a close win in their season opener against Seckman, 51-46.

The Lancers had started the game strong, jumping to a 10-point lead by halftime. Just before the break, junior guard Maria Golfo picked off a Jaguars pass and scored in transition, giving Lafayette a 31–21 lead.

In the third quarter, the Lancers struggled offensively, scoring only seven points, but continued playing strong defense, forcing many key turnovers and holding the Jaguars to just nine points.

Lafayette was once again outscored, 16-13, in the fourth quarter, but Callaham went five-for-ten at the free throw line, down the stretch, to help the Lancers win by five.

“It was good to see them battle adversity on the road, early on in the season, and battle one out,” Coach Gregg Hrdlicka said.

Boys basketball win a close game to open the season

Down 33-27, senior guard Brady Micek inbounded the ball to senior forward Drew Pickering, who then made a three pointer, kickstarting  a 14-0 run by the Lafayette boys basketball team, as they went on to beat Seckman in their first game of the season, 53-48. 

The Lancer jumped to a 17-7 lead by the end of the first quarter, but the Jaguars rallied, and grabbed a one-point lead by halftime, 23-22. 

From there the game remained close, before Lafayette went on the decisive run, to take a seven point lead. Seckman made a late push but couldn’t close the gap.

“Great first game, it’s always tough to win on the road. This is a tough place to play, there is a great crowd, great basketball. I have to give Seckman some credit, they made big shots as well and played physical,” Coach Don Kreienkamp said.
