Social Studies teacher Steve Klawiter will have his AP World History class take the digital exam this May. He said he looks forward to seeing how his students will perform on the exam. “Its been very clear theyre moving towards digital. Since the pandemic started, theyve been putting the pieces in place to go digital, Klawiter said. “I think that ultimately it’s going to be more beneficial because with systems like Canvas and Google Classroom, students are used to more digital activities and less handwriting activities.”

Gun Control: Obama’s Path to Safety

Gun+Control%3A+Obamas+Path+to+Safety

A loud bang wakes you up. The notoriously bad neighborhood and seemingly restless sound of police sirens make you uneasy.  Your spouse is still by your side. Never having owned a gun before, the thought of being helpless to an armed invader sends chills down your spine. The racket begins to relax and you think about whatever it takes to fall back asleep. It’s just the dog…

Do you wish you had a gun or do you wish that they didn’t?

This question can help you pick a side on the complex topic of gun control. One side is afraid of losing their guns and the other is afraid of what those guns are capable of. Most people do agree that gun violence is an issue and the government has to do something to reassure Americans that our communities and kids are safe. But how do we do it without treading on our second amendment rights?

“Guns are a tradition in America, but there needs to be some sort of a limit,” said Lafayette’s resource officer Ollie Helbig said.

President Obama’s has the answer to gun violence and it has no intention of eliminating our right to bear arms. It includes reinstating an assault weapon ban, closing background check loopholes, and giving money to improve safety in school and mental health services

One of the loopholes Obama is trying to stop are gun auctions where guns are sold quickly and dealers often disregard background checks.

Vice President of the National Rifle Association (NRA), Wayne LaPierre argues, “background checks would do little to stop criminals from getting guns and would burden law-aiding citizens.”

When investigators have acquired guns from crimes, they’ve found that most guns had been sold from one guy to another, and sold to someone else again. No matter what laws to keep guns off the street are passed, there will always be criminals who are desperate enough to break them, but that is no excuse for inaction

If background checks won’t work and anyone could get a gun, let’s give everybody a gun so we can be sure to defend ourselves. Sound like chaos? Well, The NRA’s responded to all the hysteria caused by the Newtown, CT shooting by proposing an idea called arm every teacher which would put a gun in every classroom. I don’t think putting more guns in our school is the answer to gun violence.

The main part of Obama’s plan is to reinstall an assault weapon ban, but he needs congress’ approval.

The Connecticut’s judicial branch defines assault weapons as any selective-fire firearm capable of fully automatic, semiautomatic or burst fire at the option of the user.

There is no reason that everyday citizens should weld guns that out-fire law enforcers’. If America wants to protect itself from mass-shootings, then we must take away the weapon capable of mass killings

Measures have already been taken. President Obama has already signed 23 executive orders, which are legislation that the president doesn’t need congressional approval to pass. One executive order is to make sure schools have emergency management plans and one that gives money for more gun violence research.

“The most important changes we can make depend on congressional action,” said President Obama, “They need to bring these proposals to a vote.”
