Through the Pantene Beautiful Lengths Hair Donation Drive, students have the opportunity to support women with cancer by donating their own hair.
Junior Rachel Radecki started Lafayette’s Redefining Beautiful club this year which is directly involved with the Beautiful Lengths Hair Donation Drive.
Radecki said, “By donating your 8-inch ponytail, they make real hair wigs for women with cancer for the American Cancer Society. Eureka High School’s Redefining Beautiful Club did this last year so we’re partnering with them this year to do it together.”
“I started the Redefining Beautiful club because I just felt that it was a really good thing to do. It improves girls’ self-esteem. We do the sticky notes in the bathroom, the dress drive and now this. I just think that it’s a good thing to have at our school,” she continued.
Juniors Maddie Beasley, Danielle Christian, Amanda Malmstrong, Maddie Rose, Katherine Stinnitt, Nina Theobald and Jenna Williams are also volunteering in the event.
Beasley encourages other girls who can donate to participate for the good cause.
“It’s only hair; it’ll always grow back. I’ve donated my hair many times and it feels rewarding knowing that somebody else can use my hair,” she said.
By cutting their hair, girls are not simply donating but helping the patients in numerous other ways.
Malmstrong said, “These cancer patients are going through a lot and it’s something little that’s really going to help their self-esteem and help them get through a tough time.”
“It’s so other girls can feel beautiful,” Christian adds.
For those who are interested in participating, the requirements are that the hair must be at least eight inches long and there can be no more than five percent gray. The hair cannot be dyed, bleached or have chemicals.
The Hair Donation Drive takes place April 20 in Eureka High School’s Gym from 10 a.m.-1 p.m.
