Spring musical expected to be unique

Spring musical expected to be unique

On the weekend of Feb. 9-11, the Lafayette Theater Company will put on the Spring Musical, which will be “The 25th Annual Putman County Spelling Bee.”

“It’s about nine kids in a spelling bee,” Natasha Toro, drama teacher, said.

According to the official “25th Annual Putman County Spelling Bee” website, the show features “a quirky yet charming cast of outsiders for whom a spelling bee is the one place where they can stand out and fit in at the same time.”

Junior Sarah Chapekis is one of the actresses who will be playing one of these such characters.

When asked which part she will play, Chapekis said, “[I will be] Marcy Park. She’s perfect and everything and she’s kind of a brat.”

According to Toro, auditions took place in November, and the actors and actresses have been rehearsing since December.

“I had to learn how to twirl a baton and then I had to learn how to twirl a gymnastics ribbon,” Chapekis said.

She said it was the hardest part of preparing for the musical.

This year, the musical will be completely different from past years, partly because of the cast size.

“We have eleven people in the cast and it is the smallest musical we have ever done,” Toro said.

Another aspect which will make the musical stand out is the audience interaction feature. According to Toro, four audience members will be randomly chosen to participate in part of the musical.

“It puts a different perspective on how we raise our children. The show is just really real,” Chapekis said.
