Social Studies teacher Steve Klawiter will have his AP World History class take the digital exam this May. He said he looks forward to seeing how his students will perform on the exam. “Its been very clear theyre moving towards digital. Since the pandemic started, theyve been putting the pieces in place to go digital, Klawiter said. “I think that ultimately it’s going to be more beneficial because with systems like Canvas and Google Classroom, students are used to more digital activities and less handwriting activities.”

New emphasis on vocabulary to boost student test scores, promote reading

New emphasis on vocabulary to boost student test scores, promote reading

For those who read the paper for the Dec. 9 issue, you may have noticed a new addition.  In each isssue for the rest of the year, Lafayette’s efforts to improve literacy will take the form of an ad that includes some type of puzzle using 20 vocabulary words.

The list of words were compiled by Test Prep Coordinator Mary Mueller and includes words provided by various departments as words common on the ACT and SAT.

The idea for this came from Assistant Principal Kirti Merhortra and the school’s  goal to increase overall literacy.

“If vocabulary goes up, reading goes up, scores go up, and grades go up,” Merhotra said about the goal.

Words will also be posted in classrooms like the character words of the month.

This will continue for five months, with 20 words a month.  This all adds up to a total of 100 words for students to learn and practice.

A list of 20 words and their definitions with a game will be put in every issue of the Image.  On the day the paper comes out, if a student turns in the completed puzzle, they are eligible for a prize.

Junior Ali Steele said, “It has the potential to be effective, but most students won’t take time to do [the puzzles].  I like the idea, but I don’t think most students will take it seriously,” Steele said.
