Closures pile up as waters rise
Highway 109 is blocked off just before Eureka High School as water flows over the road.
According to the National Weather Service, the Meramec River in Eureka, MO is now predicted to crest at 46.4 feet at 1 a.m. on May 3. If this prediction is correct, the river will set a new record, even higher than the flood in December of 2015.
The weather is continuing to affect the estimated water levels. In Eureka, it is predicted that there is a 100% chance of rain on Wednesday, May 3 and a 90% chance of rain on Thursday, May 4.
With rising water levels, many roads are beginning to face closures.
Highway 109 is currently closed in three areas:
- 109 near Old State Road
- 109 in front of Eureka High School
- 109 over the Meramec River between I-44 and Highway W
Interstate 44 also faces many closures between Highway 109 and Highway 141.
As of April 30, Missouri Governor Eric Greitens reported two fatalities as a result of the flooding. In a press conference on April 30, Greitens gave instructions for Missourians to follow in order to stay safe.
“This is serious. If you must drive, slow down and be alert. Please do not try to drive through high water,” Greitens said.
