To allow student art to get better representation in the school, Principal John Shaughnessy and Lauaren Sakowsiki, Head of the Art Deparment, have created the Principal’s Choice Award.

“It’s my way of acknowledging some good artistic work that our students have created over the years, and it gives me a chance to put that art in the building for future people to see and put it on display,” Shaughnessy said.

The award is given by Shaugnnesy at the end of the year during the District Art Show. Shaugnnesy picks pieces of art that he enjoys and views as unique. With the permission of the artist, the pieces are copied, framed and then placed outside of the Welcome Center.

Pieces on display include one by Kaylee Kombrink, senior, as well as three pieces by Lafayette alumni Julia Fox, Emma Harford and Andrea Moore.

“It’s not just a way to honor our student artists and our art program, but also a way to have more student work visible in the building. I think it’s wonderful that Mr. Shaugnnesy has allowed us this opportunity to really showcase our artists,” Sakowsiki said.

The pieces chosen will be permanently place on display in the building. Every year, Shaughnessy will add to the collection after every District Art Show.

“My intent is just to continually add to it every year and just begin to fill our building with great looking pieces that our students have made,” Shaughnessy said.
