Second EOC Week causes problems for AP classes

Next weeks EOC schedule from April 8 until April 12
Next weeks EOC schedule from April 8 until April 12

During the week of April 25 through May 2 the traditional class schedule will change due to the final week of EOC testing. With this upcoming change, and last week’s modified EOC schedule, many AP classes are having a difficult time preparing for exams.

Math teacher Jerri Heth is having problems scheduling practice exams for her AP Calculus class, specifically her 5th hour.

“The second EOC week has really affected my 5th period AP Calculus class. They’re being cut short three and half hours,” Heth said.

According to Testing Coordinator Jessica Brawner, the second week of modified schedule was due to the addition of US History and English I exams. However, this year EOC week was scheduled around the time of many other school activities, such as Senior field trips and the Junior ACT.

Without this class time, students in 5th hour no longer have the chance to take a third practice exam in class. Luckily, Heth has decided to schedule an extra exam on a Saturday for those students who are interested.

Heth said, “Hopefully, since I’m offering the third test on a Saturday, the EOC schedule won’t make a difference for their scores on the AP exams. However, for those who can’t make it on that date or don’t want to, it might hurt their scores.”

Senior JD Casias, a student in Heth’s 5th hour, said, “I wish we would’ve been able to fit the third exam in class, but hopefully I’ll be able to go to the Saturday exam for the extra practice.”

Another class that’s having difficulty with the revised EOC schedule is science teacher Shannon Campbell’s AP Physics class.

“EOC week has made the schedule a little crazy. Since I didn’t see my students every day, we had to learn things that we would normally learn over the span of a few days in one,” Campbell said.

However, Campbell does not believe that the EOC weeks will affect her students’ overall score, as she said that depends on how hard the individual student works and studies.
