Water polo skates into playoffs

Nobody can stop the Lancers. Lafayette’s water polo team had its best season in school history, with a record of 23-3-2. Their two ties came at the hands of McHenry High School from suburban Chicago and Parkway West. Their three losses were dealt out by Schaumburg High School from suburban Chicago, Lindbergh and SLUH.

A key component of the Lancers success is their experience. The Lancer squad is comprised of six seniors, six juniors, and just one sophomore.

“I think we have a good base of experienced players, and I think our team has a wide array of talent,” said Rastko Stojsin. “Mitchell Wells and Michael Murphy have really helped us become a powerhouse.”

Although the Lancers have faced very stiff competition this season, they have managed to run the gauntlet of their schedule and emerge relatively unscathed, losing only 3 games. Their most heartbreaking loss of the season may have been their one-goal loss to the Lindbergh Flyers.

“We have faced Lindbergh, they beat us 7-6, it was tough,” Stojsin said. “We made a comeback in the second half. If we played the whole game like we played the second half, it would have been a different story.”

As the Lancers close out their season and enter the playoffs, they are optimistic about their prospects of advancement.

“We have District Championships, if we beat who we’re supposed to beat, we’ll face either Lindbergh in the semifinals, and if we beat them, we’ll meet SLUH in the District Championship game. I think we definitely have the potential to win state this year, it all depends on how we play, but there are a lot of variables,” Stojsin said.

The Lancers will face an opponent that has yet to be decided in the first game of the District Tournament at Lindbergh High School at 4 pm. on Saturday.
