Lafayette beats Marquette, obtain first win of season
September 16, 2014
Rejoice, Lancer fans. The varsity football team captured its first victory in a hard-fought match up against the Marquette Mustangs. Cameron Scales was on fire, throwing 2 touchdown passes. Combining with his accurate arm, Scales also ran for a 43 yd touchdown.
Marquette’s quarterback, junior Jason Powers, threw 2 touchdowns for 186 yards. He also threw an interception. But the main problem for Marquette appeared to be their defensive, letting the Lancers rack up the points quickly.
For the Lancers, junior Brendan Scales caught 3 passes and gained 45 yards. Along with Scales’ success, junior Collin Paul’s 70 yards overall and 5 receptions helped the team climb out ahead even farther. Another contributing factor on the offensive side of the ball, was senior Justin Perry, who rushed 25 yards in 11 attempts.
Lafayette won the game by 10 points, beating out the Mustangs 31-21.
Senior Keith Sims said, “We’ve been working hard playing as a team. Next week against Lindbergh, that’s going to be our strategy.”
The gates for next week open up at 7 p.m. The game will be played at Lindbergh.
