With five seconds left in the Midwest Field Hockey Tournament and the her team leading, senior Corrinne Murphy couldn’t wait to start celebrating.
“I turned to Ashton (Lichvar) and shouted ‘oh my gosh, oh my gosh’ and then we all started freaking out,” she explained.
The Lady Lancers had just completed a historic run with in the Midwest Field Hockey Tournament, defeating Cor Jesu 2-0 to become just the fourth public school in tournament history to take home the title and the first since 1988.
“I have never felt so excited and so accomplished. But this year has been my favorite field hockey season ever not only because we won State, but because…everyone cared so much and for all the seniors, it was the best way to finish off our four years at Lafayette,” Murphy said of a team with 21 seniors.
Junior Kate Barber capped her own sensational season by scoring the first goal early in the first half, her 27th of the season. She also had 35 assists to give her 85 total points, 30 more than anyone else in the St. Louis area.
Senior Monica Carron added insurance with a goal ten minutes into the second half.
It was the second meeting of these two teams this season, with Cor Jesu taking the season-opener 2-1 on Aug. 31. After that loss, the Lady Lancers ran off 22 straight victories on the way to their State championship.
The defense that shut out Cor Jesu went the last 11 games of the season without allowing a goal and gave up just 11 season.
