With two minutes left in the fourth quarter, trailing by one point, Lafayette faced a fourth-and-1 at the Helias Catholic 5-yard line. The team opted for a field goal, but senior kicker Jake Ference hesitated, believing a Crusader defender had jumped offsides. The delay allowed the kick to be blocked, preserving Helias Catholic’s lead.
This missed opportunity, among others, ended Lafayette’s season with a 14-13 loss to Helias Catholic in the MSHSAA Class 5 state semifinal on Friday, Nov. 29.
“I was just watching the ball and the holder, so I don’t know what happened, but obviously we didn’t execute,” Coach Boyd Manne said.
Helias Catholic (12-1) will face Platte County (13-0) in the MSHSAA Class 5 State final at Faurot Field, Dec. 7.
Following the missed field goal, the Lancer defense would force the Crusaders to a three-and-out. But Lafayette failed to do much on the next drive, after senior quarterback Jack Behl was sidelined due to a shoulder injury.
This injury and an earlier injury to junior wide receiver Terance Bills, forced the Lancers pass-heavy offense to focus more on rushing plays. Bills had 44 total yards and scored Lafayette’s only touchdown of the game.

The game ended after Lafayette failed to convert a fourth- and-7 from the 50-yard-line, as senior wide receiver Robby Preckel’s pass fell incomplete.
Throughout the game, both teams played great defense. The Lafayette defense held the Crusaders to 240 total yards. They also forced four fumbles, and senior defensive back Drew Austerman had an interception.

Helias Catholic’s defense also played well, allowing the Lancer offense to just 243 total yards, two fumbles, an interception, and a blocked field goal.
“The plan [for the defense] was to just stop the run and we did. We had some trouble moving the ball in the 2nd half. Hats off to Helias, they played a great game,” Manne said.
But ultimately, it was the multiple missed opportunities by the Lancer offense that lost Lafayette the game. Ference attempted five field goals, making two, and the offense only scored once in the red zone.
“The kids played great, but we came up short on some plays and didn’t execute at pivotal times,” Manne said.
Lafayette started the game strong, taking a 13-0 lead late in the 2nd quarter. But, Behl would throw an interception, giving the Crusaders the ball at the Lancer’s 24-yard-line.
Junior quarterback Austin Weaver would then throw a 25-yard touchdown pass, making it a one possession game, to end the half.

Following this touchdown, neither team was able to get a proper scoring chance, until the blocked field goal attempt.
This was just the sixth time that Lafayette has made it to the State semi-final in football, and they have never made it farther.
“These seniors are great, just their effort and work ethic, I can’t say enough about them. We are really proud of them,” Manne said.
