During the Lancers’ lop-sided 65-26 victory over Fox on Feb. 7, senior Joel Pennington broke the all-time assist record for Lafayette.
The record was previously held by Landon Shipley with 369 assists, but now Pennington leads the way with 372.
Pennington spoke highly of his teammates and coaches for making this a memorable experience.
“I am honored to have broken the career assist record but I couldn’t have done it without my teammates… literally” Pennington said.
For the season, he currently has 109 assists and averages 4.95 per game.
Pennington added, “I also have to thank my coaches, Coach Allen and Coach Landwehr, for giving me the opportunity and teaching me the game for the past three years.”
Allen returned the praise for his senior point guard for reaching the milestone.
“Assists require quite a few things. A guard that is a good passer, has great vision and can make plays. Guys receiving the passes that can score helps, too. Joel has been very good at this and has had some guys who can score as well. This is a neat record to break and well deserved” Allen said.
