During my free time, I often like to open up “The Elements of Style,” the classic book in which authors William Strunk Jr. and E.B. White discuss the basic principles of the English language and offer tips to aspiring writers. You might ask, “What does this have to do with fashion?” or “Why do you do that in your free time?” And I would answer, “Mostly because I am a grammar fanatic, but also because the development of a sentence and the construction of an outfit are not as different as you might think.”
That being said, here are a few tips to help you navigate your way around an outfit, and a sentence.
SHOES. Just as a sentence needs words, an outfit inevitably needs a pair of shoes. Uggs are great and comfortable, but, seeing that shoes are a necessary component of your outfit, you might as well change it up once in a while. I suggest embellished flats, oxfords, suede heels, wedges, and leather boots/booties. And if you want to add something extra, consider wearing some ankle or knee-high socks with some cut-out heels and a cute dress.
JEWELRY. I like to compare jewelry to commas. Though a sentence can be complete without them, commas make sentences a lot more interesting. Likewise, jewelry elevates an outfit to another level—a more exciting and sophisticated level. Try wearing a big necklace, a chain or cuff bracelet, or a crystal ring. If appropriate, you could even try to layer a couple necklaces together.
BAGS. Think of a handbag as the period at the end of the sentence; it anchors the entire outfit and pulls it together. A carelessly chosen bag can diminish even the most impressive ensemble. Consider carrying a structured bag during the day, a sequined clutch at night, and color 24/7.
OTHER. Shoes, jewelry, and bags are all fundamentals of fashion, right? Well, that doesn’t mean you should ignore the other accessories, which I consider exclamations to an outfit. Every great story contains exclamations expressing joy, love, or passion, all of which can be expressed through the addition of the proper scarf, hat, pin, or headband to an outfit. The inclusion of just one of these items in your ensemble can make the difference between pretty and stunning.
Keep in mind that, in fashion, nothing is ever 100% fool-proof, nor is anything ever completely awful. And remember: don’t make fashion a burden in your life; make it fun!
In summary, here is a chart that comprises all of the current hits and misses in fashion:
ACCESSORIES: TAKE IT, OR LEAVE IT?

TRY: | Embellished flats, oxfords, suede heels, wedges, leather boots/booties | Big necklaces, chain bracelets, cuffs, crystal rings | Structured bags, sequin clutches, colorful extras | Wool scarves, velvet pins, feather headbands, bejeweled stocking caps |
AVOID: | Old sneakers, Crocs | Gaudy pieces | Boho or overly slouchy bags | Not wearing scarves, pins, headbands, or hats at all! |
