At the 2023 Prom, Class of 2023 graduates Joe Marlo and Will Barry stay at the edge of the main floor to do their dancing. Because the small dance floor was the most crowded area, many students gathered around the edges with friends or in small groups.

The future of music?

Internet has proven to be God’s gift to music. Young and upcoming artists have turned to social networking sites and sites that offer free downloadable music as a way to expand their fan base even before releasing an album.

With the music scene shifting to a sort of new-age, polished pop sound more and more instrumentals have been created digitally. This trend seems to breathe life into the sudden rise of DJ’s across the world as they sample and mash- up original tracks to create an entirely new song.

With a wave of 18 year-old lyricists stemming from middle-class–suburbia it is no surprise that the use of the internet and digital beats has been a huge factor in which some artist gains notoriety and others artist remain in the underground scene.

The accessibility of mixtapes or single tracks has given listeners the first taste of artists, even before record labels can sink their teeth and suck dry the creativity and individuality of the artist or band.

While sites like datpiff.com, goodmusicallday.com, thekollection.com, livemixtapes.com and daytrotter.com offer free downloadable mixtapes it seems that social networking sites, especially Twitter are another outlet to immediate audience criticism.

It seems that if you can get feedback in the early stages of production the song or album as a whole will be better received as it will already have a little something for everyone to enjoy.

Artists like Asher Roth, Hoodie Allen and Wiz Khalifa frequently update their “tweets” and actually respond to those who comment on their accounts. Recently Hoodie Allen held a live video feed on Twitter where he played one of his new songs and had followers give him feedback.

While the next generation of artists is slowly rising to popularity through the underground circuit it seems that the integration of the internet will be vital to their success. Gaining fans, who actually have a say in the final product, virtually seconds after a song is posted online.

While the future success of young artists is still a ways off it seems that they have already conquered the internet, having a firm fan base to carry with them throughout their career.
