Washington Post honors Lafayette in annual ‘America’s Most Challenging High School’ survey

The Washington Post has compiled a list of ‘America’s Most Challenging High Schools,’ on which Lafayette has placed 771 out of 1900 public high schools nationwide.

This list ranks schools based on Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate and Advanced International Certificate of Education tests the school administers to its students divided by the number of graduating seniors that year. The lowest index score a school can receive is 1.000.

Lafayette stands at a solid 2.321, one of the highest in Missouri.  Washington Post’s most academically challenging high school in the country,  American Indian Public Charter in Oakland, CA, received an index score of 2.357, almost six percent higher than its closest competitor on the compilation.

Principal John Shaughnessy was enthused with this ranking.

“We are proud of this accomplishment,” Shaughnessy, on behalf of the staff, said.  “[The rank] is a very nice recognition.”

Senior Devin Powell agrees with the ranking.

“That sounds about right,” said Powell.  “Lafayette’s hard, but it’s not an intense prep school or anything.”

  2. Ladue Horton Watkins
  3. Hogan Prep Academy (KC)
  4. Marquette High School
  5. Lindbergh High School
