Teacher of the Year Lori Zang to raffle parking spot for #teamwif

In honor of a well known student, Lori Zang, Social Studies teacher and also 2012-2013 Teacher of the Year, is raffling off her parking spot in honor of #teamwif, Michael Wefelmeyer’s charity to raise money for the treatment of his Leukemia.

One of the perks of being selected TOY is the prime parking spot in front of the Welcome Center.

Zang met Wefelmeyer through Mock Trial, which she sponsors

“He was the only sophomore on the Mock Trial team.  He was so energetic and enthusiastic, and he got along great with all the upperclassmen.  On our way to state in Kansas City last April, Michael sat in the front seat and controlled the radio.  He belted out just about every song that came on, ” she said.

Zang, who heard of Wefelmeyer’s diagnosis over the summer, was devastated.

“When I found out about his diagnosis over the summer, I was shocked. I emailed his mom since I got to know her on our state trip. I assured her then and have throughout the school year that I would do whatever I can to help Michael this school year.  I know I was specifically thinking of AP Government when I made that statement, but I’m honored to be able to help him and his family this way, too,” Zang said.

As for the idea of the raffle-that was sparked by a conversation with Zang’s fellow teachers.

“Shortly after winning Teacher of the Year, I was having a conversation with a few teachers in the Academic Lab. Mrs. [Danna] Phillips commented that she hoped I actually used the spot, while Ms.[Monique] Merritt said, ‘She probably won’t. She parks on the other side of the building.’  I joked that I could raffle it off to the highest bidder and then it just hit me–I could raffle it off and donate the money. I have Michael in class and I’ve seen him on good days and earlier in the year I watched him struggle. Winning Teacher of the Year and being given this prime parking space created the perfect opportunity to do something to show my support for Michael and the entire family.” Zang said.

This raffle, which will take place April 29-May 3, features one ticket for $5, and three for $10. All money will be given to #teamwif, and the winner of the raffle will be announced at the end of the day May 3.
