This year, four students in the Rockwood District received Pfizer company sponsored scholarships, to be used at the college of the recipient’s choosing. Three out of these four go to Lafayette, seniors Seth Ludwig, Daniel Martin and David Wang. They all received stipends from Pfizer, either in the form of a onetime payment or a yearly amount of money to be received.
The awards, which were given out to finalists of the National Merit competition and those who met Pfizer’s requirements, are given to children whose parents work for the company, people in the community, or those who plan to pursue a career the company wishes to encourage.
At the end of the Nation Merit competition, the money given out to students through awards is expected to be upwards of 35 million dollars with some 8,000 students receiving some kind of stipend or lump sum.
To be a National Merit Finalist, students were chosen based on academic performance and achievement, extracurricular activities and potential to succeed in rigorous college level courses. The awards are only used on tuition costs.
Wang intends to use his money at Vanderbilt university for the field of molecular biology. Ludwig, who plans on going to Rensselear university for chemical engineering. Lastly, Martin is going to school for the purpose of joining the nuclear engineering work force.
