Last Wednesday, May 8, the film crew for the documentary The Walking Man arrived at Lafayette to talk to group members of Be The Change.
The documentary was about Mark Norwine, a man who had been dealing with a misdiagnosed illness his entire life, when he walked across Missouri on the Katy Trail.
On April 26, Norwine started his journey at Sedalia and ended it on May 11 at Creve Coeur Park.
Along the way, he stopped at various places to talk about his experiences with bipolar, depression and bullying.
That’s where Lafayette’s Be The Change comes in.
Norwine and his film crew stopped at Lafayette to discuss the group’s experiences with bullying and how the group fights back.
Together, they discussed ideas that Be The Change could use in the future, such as having students wear white t-shirts with what makes them feel insecure in order to spark conversations.
Freshman Jayme Henderson, an attendee of the meeting, thought the brainstorming was a good start.
“They’d really be able to open people up and let people know how others feel,” Henderson said. “They were personable and heartwarming.”
Henderson believes that Lafayette could see these ideas used in the future.
“If we do it at the right time, I think it’ll happen.” Henderson said.
