With skits performed by students, videos of students being played and students getting rewarded for academic success, the Academic Pep Assembly (APA) is always enjoyable.
The APA is an annual event at Lafayette High School and is being held on March 12, 2013.
APA day is a C-Day, and the schedule will be condensed to make time for the assembly. There will also be a showing of the documentary, Girl Rising, during first, second and fifth hour.
Contrary to the name, the Academic Pep Assembly is not about academics but rather a way to reward students for their academic achievements. Sophomore Principal, Mandy Lewis, points out that the APA was intended to be entertaining for students.
The APA is, “An opportunity to recognize and celebrate the various academic achievements of all our students,” Principal John Shaughnessy said, “With lots of lights, music, skits and awards.”
As Shaughnessy indicates, the APA is an exclusive event at few Rockwood schools: Rockwood Summit, Eureka and Lafayette.
Students are involved in the event by handing out prizes to students who are being recognized for their academic success and by performing comical skits. The Renaissance Student Steering Committee (RSSC) plans the event each year, but they are not the only students featured in the APA.
Shaughnessy informs that the RSSC, “Tries to get a representation of students from each grade level,” to perform in the skits.
Overall, the APA is more of a witty show than just an assembly.
The event is intended to be entertaining and enjoyable for students to attend; a reward for their hard work.
The APA is also a way to remind students of their own academic success Lewis said, “I don’t think that students often realize how much academic success we have at Lafayette.”
Contrary to popular belief, the APA is not only for students who have outstanding grades.
Shaughnessy said, “The APA also has a component of recognizing most improved students from each grade level as well as recognition for the student who improved his or her grade point average the most from Freshmen to Senior year.”
For those students who may not feel academically successful, Shaughnessy said the APA is also beneficial in that it acts as, “A motivator for all students to work hard for opportunities of recognition.”
As Shaughnessy pointed out, “All students are expected to attend since it is during the school day.”
However, many students see the APA as an excuse to leave school early.
Whether students decide to leave early or stay, the APA is guaranteed to be a fun and amusing event to enjoy with friends.
