Social studies teacher Lori Zang recently received her National Board Certification, and represents Lafayette among many other Rockwood teachers.
The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) is an organization that focuses on the improvement of teaching and learning.
According to their website www.nbpts.org, there are lists of propositions and standards that teachers must meet in order to qualify for certification.
There are 25 certificates available covering a variety of subject areas and grade levels. The award is given out based on a submission of a portfolio and teaching performance.
“I had met and exceeded the national social studies standards for teaching,” said Zang.
Zang decided to partake in the process herself, and first decided to look into it March 2010. She began videotaping lessons and writing essays by fall of 2010.
“It was a very lengthy and involved process, it was very time consuming and did take a huge toll on my social life and free time,” said Zang.
This didn’t stop her though, as Zang continued and eventually tested the first week of June 2011.
“The teachers in Rockwood really care about their professions, and all of their effort is essentially beneficial to the students,” said Zang.
