In order to promote education and literacy, Lafayette jumped in on the academic celebrations of American Education Week.
This week is dedicated to spreading awareness and to help fight the problems of illiteracy. The goal is to get students involved in a cause that directly affects them.
“It makes kids aware of the issues that surround literacy and perhaps the lack of literacy,” said language arts teacher Dawn Indelicato- Faw.
Wednesday was dress up like your favorite book character day. Through the halls students were dressed up as characters ranging from Harry Potter to Junie B. Jones.
Senior Katie Czolgosz decided to dress up as Waldo, from the popular Where is Waldo books.
“Waldo is an awesome iconic character and I wanted to support literacy week because it’s such an important cause,” said Czolgosz
“It was pretty funny to have people say they found me all day,” she added.
Help support Literacy Week in conjunction with American Education Week. Bring in children’s books to donate to Gateway 180, a shelter for women and children.
The first 150 donations will receive a coupon for a free Mr. Goodcent’s cookie. Each book donated will make students eligible to enter in a raffle for free food from Chick-fil-A, Hardee’s and Penn Station, and for a grand prize. Up to five entries are allowed.
Fine forgiveness from the library will also be given to those who donate books.
All books can be brought to the stage during all lunch shifts this week, and the Community Service Class will deliver them to Gateway 180.
