A lot of students may spend their free time playing video games, binge watching Netflix or being with friends.

For Lily Otero, junior, her passion lies somewhere else.

“I learned how to sew in my 6th grade Family and Consumer Science class, and I loved it ever since,” Otero said.

Not only does Otero occasionally sew and alter her own clothing, but she was also the costume designer for this years Lafayette Theater Company (LTC) musical, Hairspray. There musical consists of 44 characters, each with about 2 or 3 costumes.

“In the past few months preparing for the show, I’ve probably altered about 30 costumes. They’re all divided among the costume crew,” Otero said.

Otero is in charge of fitting all of the actors and then altering their costumes so they fit correctly. She also adds design and styles to go with the theme of the musical.

“My favorite thing that I did was to add leopard print to the dress of Motormouth Maybelle, it looks really sassy. Little things like that can go a long way,” Otero said.

Otero’s dream is to go to the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), where she plans to pursue fashion.
