At the 2023 Prom, Class of 2023 graduates Joe Marlo and Will Barry stay at the edge of the main floor to do their dancing. Because the small dance floor was the most crowded area, many students gathered around the edges with friends or in small groups.

St. Louie Style: Dressed to impress

I often look around the halls of Lafayette and wonder to myself what crossed some of the students’ minds when they picked out their outfits.

I don’t mean that in a mean way, I just wonder if they truly like what they’re wearing or if they’re just following trends or wearing what their friends think is cool.

I notice a lot of people who wear clothes to impress others or follow what others are wearing, when they should be wearing an outfit to impress themselves.

I’ve discovered that style is all about confidence.  People are always saying not to be overly confident in yourself, but I think that’s the wrong message.

Just think about it.  When you’re wearing one of your favorite outfits, don’t you feel better about yourself and more confident?  That’s how it should be.  Clothes are designed to make you feel good about yourself.

Which leads me to my original point.  Students, and people everywhere, need to remember to dress for themselves and not others.  The person you want to impress most is yourself, and others should like you for who you are and you shouldn’t have to impress them with your clothes.  Wear what you want, not what your friends or muses are already wearing.

Developing your own sense of style is important.  People should recognize your style and individuality when you walk into school each morning.  And what’s the point of everyone dressing the same?
