Revenge of the Fallen: Lafayette avenges last year’s opening day loss with a win over Eureka
September 22, 2016
Lafayette (3-2) won 14-7 in a thrilling rivalry game against previously undefeated Eureka (4-1). The Lancers used their sound play on defense to beat a run heavy Eureka offense that featured Hassan Haskins and a large, athletic offensive line. The game initially was moved to 5:30 because of the predicted inclement weather, but the game was still played in a downpour that progressively got worse. Rain was arguably the biggest factor in this game, as the wet ball caused receivers to drop passes, runners to fumble, and players slipping. Because of the rain, specifically in the second half, there was not much offense for either team.
“(The rain) really limits your ability to throw and catch on offense, forces you to run the ball and when you run the ball you fumble easier, and it’s easier to force fumbles,” said Zach Janicki.
For Eureka, the game plan was to run for most of the game. They totaled 288 rushing yards, including their sole score, a 53 yard run from Haskins. However, the Wildcats only had 44 yards passing on five completions out of 20 throws and two interceptions.
The Lancers had more success in the passing game, but much of that was outside of the rain. They totaled 167 passing on eight of 22 passing and no interceptions. They also had 140 rushing yards, most of which was accumulated by Austin Stofer.
Defense played very well again, with Kyran Ballard getting two fumble recoveries, and an interception returned for what was the game deciding score by Janicki.
“We’re definitely being more aggressive, and bringing more people on blitzes,”Janicki said.
Lafayette’s next game is against the Marquette Mustangs (3-2). The Mustangs offense has averaged 27.6 points and have only lost to Eureka and in a close game to Parkway North (4-1).
The game is on Sept. 23 at Marquette. The game start time is 7 p.m.
