Lady Lancers try to find success and make progress with young team

The Lafayette Lancer girls varsity basketball team has been working diligently at improving their game after losing much of their team at the conclusion of last year and earlier this season.

Sophomore guard Jenny Kohl was put in charge of guiding the youthful team at the beginning of the season. To combine with her good passing, she is averaging 8.1 points a game. She is also shooting a team leading 73% from the free throw line so far this season.

Also shooting well from the stripe at 68%, senior Rachel Peipert is averaging a consistent 8.3 points a game.

Rebounding is a key part in winning any basketball game and the Lancers have worked hard on crashing the glass. Sophomores Maria Johnson and Tayler Dent have backed the defensive side of the ball, averaging 11 rebounds a game combined, swiping steals, and blocking shots.

Senior Savannah King has played strong both on defense and offense as well grabbing 4 boards a game. Passing hasn’t been an issue, with her court vision helping her rack up 21 total assists.

Despite the seemingly plausible individual statistics, the teams overall record has been far from competitive.

With a 2-13 overall record, both conference and out of conference games have presented challenges to the Lancers. Since the majority of the team was made up of now graduated seniors, having an inexperienced young team is a setback that is only fixable by practice, leadership and team chemistry.

For now however, the Lancers must strive and continue working hard to improve their record this season.

They will seek to play strong in their match up against the 15-2 Eureka Wildcats next Friday at 5:30.
