In their Feb. 25 Class 5, District 4 championship match-up against Eureka, the Lady Lancers varsity basketball team pulled out a 51-36 victory over their Suburban West Conference co-champion.
The team took hold of a stable lead early, outscoring the Wildcats 21-4 in the second quarter alone before going up 32-13 at halftime.
They were also able to keep Eureka standout center Alex Hillyer under tight control, as the 6-3 junior only scored eight points despite averaging 20.2 points per game (ppg) during the course of the season.
Junior Ashley Hipp led all scorers after putting up 17 points for the Lady Lancer’s. The Conference’s leading scorer, junior Jordynn Martin, also added 14.
The team is now preparing to take on St. Joseph’s Academy, who currently sits at 25-3. This Sectional round matchup of the State playoffs will take place on March 2 at 7:45 p.m. at the University of Missouri-St. Louis.
The Angels will led by juniors Maddie Stock (17.8 ppg) and Morgan Stock (10.2 ppg), however their primary threat lies with sophomore Sydney Stipanovich.
As the daughter of the former NBA player Steve Stipanovich, she is averaging 14 points and 12 rebounds per contest and poses an effective force on both ends of the floor.
“If we do what we know how to do then we’ll win,” Martin said, “but if we get intimidated and play scared then the outcome is not going to be good.”
