Watching a small group scrimmage, Ben Lundt, St. Louis City SC goalkeeper and founder of Lundt Pro Soccer Training, shouts words of encouragement to players on Sunday, April 26 n the Lafayette grass soccer field. “The idea behind [the event] was to bring the professional soccer players closer to the community because usually people only get to see us on TV or in the stadium. [Families] actually having the opportunity to have their kids on the field with us is the most important aspect,” Ben Lundt said.

In celebration of winning his second straight state title in the 215 weight class, junior Carter Brown backflips before leaving the mat. Brown won his bout against junior Kobe Rhymes of North Kansas City High School by fall in just 41 seconds. "Carter does what Carter does. We expect [success] out of him and his goals are bigger than the state championship," coach Sam Ritchie said.

As a final preparation for the winter musical “The Addams Family,” LTC performs in front of middle school students on Wednesday, Feb. 4 during lunch time in the Theatre. “The musical was based around the Addams family and their troubles after Wednesday Addams falls in love with a boy from Ohio that is vastly different from the family. Lucas Beineke and his parents, Mal and Alice, are as normal as can be and they struggle to understand the Addams and their way of life. The musical follows the two families as they struggle with secrets, love, and understanding each other,” said senior cast member Lucas Niblett.
A grave success
In the paint, senior forward Drew Pickering attempts to get a shot off, in the Battle of 109. The rivalry match-up remained close all game, before Eureka pulled away late, winning 56-53.

September Female Athlete of the Month: Maya Witherspoon

Playing outside hitter, senior Maya Witherspoon hits a kill against Oakville, Sept. 4, 2024. The Lancers would go on to win their first home game, 3-0. “Our goal as a team is win our third State Championship,” Witherspoon said.

Name: Maya Witherspoon

Grade: Senior

Position: Outside Hitter 

Sports Involvement:: Senior outside hitter, Maya Witherspoon earned Athlete of the Month after breaking the Lafayette all-time kills record. This season she has played 48 sets and had 185 kills. The previous record was set by Lisa Downey, Class of 2001, at 1036 kills. Witherspoon broke the record after 24 years against Oakville on Sept. 4, 2024.  She finished that game with 1039 all-time kills, and currently has 1229 all-time kills. 

Goal for the Season: “As a team, especially after the past couple of years, we want to go for our third state championship. Personally, my goal was to hit 1000 kills, which happened early in the season and then I didn’t even know I was close to breaking the school record, but that would have been my next goal.” 

Favorite sports moment: “I would say winning state for the first time with my older sister.”

Future Plans: Witherspoon has committed to Vanderbilt University and will begin playing there starting in January.

After beating Oakville 3-0, Sept. 4, 2024, senior Maya Witherspoon celebrates breaking the Lafayette all-time kills record. The previous record was set at 1030, and as of Oct. 2, 2024 Witherspoon has 1229 kills. "I had no idea I was close to breaking the record, so it was kind of a surprise, but also exciting," Witherspoon said.

In a singles match against Parkway West, senior Mia Yin prepares to serve. This tournament was one of only four losses that the Lafayette team had all season.

With her hand in the air, junior batter Sidney Vogt gets ready to high five her coach on a run to home-plate. Vogt hit a grand slam this game to lead the Lancers to a 16-1 blowout against St. Joe, Sept. 2.

After losing only one game all season, the Lafayette girls volleyball (40-1) celebrates winning the MSHSAA Class5 State Championship, Nov. 7. With the win, the team has now four-peated at State for the second time in school history. "Being a part of the 4-peat was an amazing experience especially since I got to do it with an amazing group of girls. It was an incredible year for all of us," junior middle blocker Peyton Dolly said.
