Baseball, girls soccer win Districts; girls track wins Sectionals

Weekly Sports Update May 15-21

Baseball

Last week, the Lancers won Districts as the five-seed. On their road to the championship, they beat Rockwood rivals Marquette 3-1 in the quarterfinals, 5-3 in the Battle of 109 against Eureka in the semifinals and beat Vianney 4-3 in the finals. In the Vianney game, it went to two extra innings with a 3-3 deadlock, however, senior Tripp Johns’ double in the ninth inning scored the game-winning run. Vianney, the one-seed, failed to score in the bottom of the ninth which gave the Lancers a District Championship. The Lancers will face Jackson, May 27, for the quarterfinals of the MSHSAA Class 6 Tournament.

Boys Golf

At the Class 5 MSHSAA State Tournament, May 15 and 16, sophomores Jake Montgomery and Anders Thomas placed 45th and 58th.

Boys Lacrosse

The Lancers’ season came to an end with a 19-10 loss against SLUH in the second round of the MSLA Class 2 State Championship, May 18.

Girls Lacrosse

In the round of 16 in the MSLA State Tournament, the Lady Lancers beat 15-2. Their quarterfinal opponent is still to be decided and will be played May 23.

Girls Soccer

The Lady Lancers won Districts last week. On the way to their tournament win, the Lady Lancers beat Waynesville 5-0 with junior Allie Kinner scoring a brace, then they beat Eureka 4-1 with another Kinner brace and in the championship, they faced rivals Marquette and beat them 1-0., with another Kinner goal. While the Lady Lancers had an early lead in the first half, they had to play more defensively in the second half. “[In the second half] we were playing a lot of defense. We were working really hard to get the ball out,” Kinner said. The Lady Lancers will play Liberty for the state quarterfinals on May 27.

Boys Track and Field

The Lancers placed second at the MSHSAA Sectional Meet at Springfield, May 20. While they did not have any event winners, they had six events qualify for State. These events include the 4×800-meter, 4×400-meter, 4×200-meter, discus, 400-meter and the 3200-meter. State will take place May 26 and 27.

Girls Track and Field

The Lady Lancers won the MSHSAA Sectional Meet at Springfield, May 20. The Lady Lancers had 11 events qualify for the state meet. The 4×800-meter relay that won the meet included senior Grace Tyson; junior Natalie Barnard and sophomores Avery Brown and Mizelle Groenwald. Barnard, Brown and Tyson also won in other events. Barnard won in the 3200-meter, Brown in the 400-meter and Tyson in the 1600-meter. While she only got fourth, senior Emma Durfee set a new school record in javelin. Durfee wasn’t surprised, “I had planned on breaking it at the beginning of the season because I was really close last year.” State will take place May 26 and 27.

Boys Volleyball

The Lancers swept Mehlville 3-0 to secure the District title. After this win, they swept Rockwood rivals Marquette, 3-0, in the State quarterfinal to advance to the semifinals. The Lancers will play in the State semifinals May 24 at Maryville University at 4:30 p.m.
