Track and field teams place in top five; several spring sports start playoffs

Weekly Sports Update: May 10-18

Baseball: On May 10, the Lancers beat Francis Howell Central, 9-1 on Senior Night. Senior Luc Fladda pitched a complete game with 12 strikeouts and the Lancers finished with 10 hits on the night. On May 11, the Lancers lost to Chaminade, 3-2. Senior John Kramer hit his 10th home run of the year bringing his career total to 18 making him the new LHS home run leader. For their third game in a row, the Lancers beat Parkway South, 14-5. Senior Justin Prager went 2 for 3 with two doubles and had four RBI’s. Junior Matt Jones helped keep the pressure on as he stole four bases against the Patriots.

Boys Golf: At the Fords Woods golf course on May 10, the Lancers sent three to the State tournament after Districts. Junior Trip Sanfelippo placed fifth, senior Logan Lanfersieck placed eighth and junior Kyle Rinkenberger placed 18th, qualifying them all for State. On May 18 in the State tournament, Sanfelippo placed 27th, Rinkenberger placed 75th and Lanferseick placed 78th.

Boys Lacrosse: The Lancers played their final regular season game on May 11 losing to Lindbergh 16-5. Sophomore Garrett Wood finished the night with eight saves. With their final game in the books, their final record was 2-12.

Girls Lacrosse: On May 11, the Lady Lancers beat Ladue in a close 17-16 victory. Senior Sophia Scheller and sophomore Natalie Tomljenovic led the way as Scheller finished with four goals and Tomljenovic finished with five. Six Lady Lancers scored against the Rams. This last game of the regular season brought their overall record to 6-7.

Girls Soccer: On May 10, the Lady Lancers lost to Marquette 1-0. Then on May 11, the Lady Lancers beat Webster Groves, 3-2. Senior Alexis Drbul scored the two regular time goals while senior Brynn Jeffires scored the winning penalty in overtime. On May 13, the Lady Lancers lost to Francis Howell, 4-2. Two of the night’s goals came from freshman Emily Derucki and junior Rylee Howard. On May 18 the Lady Lancers went on and beat Marquette 3-2 in the semi-finals. The game to overtime thanks to Howard scoring the tying goal with 40 seconds left in the second half. Then in overtime, Derucki scored the winning goal with 21 seconds left in the overtime period. The Lady Lancers will play next on Thursday, May 20 against Eureka in the District championship game.

Boys Tennis: On May 11, the Lancers lost to MICDS 5-0 in the team District semifinals ending the season.

Girls Track and Field: On May 15, the Lady Lancers got fourth place in the Districts at Liberty High School. The team was able to qualify for Sectionals in 10 out of 19 events. The Lady Lancers also had three event champions. Seniors Madison Slater, Hope Ware, sophomores Elissa Barnard and Grace Tyson won the 4x800m. Tyson also won the 3200m. Junior Galina Knysh won the pole vault. The other eight events in which they qualified for Sectionals included junior Paige Halter, Knysh, sophomore Melissa White and freshman Emily Derucki in the 4x200m relay, Tyson in the 1600m,  Halter, Kynsh, sophomore Maya Osborne and freshman Lexi Heberer in the 4×100 relay, Slater in the 400m, Halter in the 200m, and Barnard in the 3200m.

Boys Track and Field: On May 15, the Lancers placed third in the District Meet. The Lancers had two District champions in the 4×800 with runners seniors  Vikas Devulapalli, Eric Reed, junior Nikolas Malek and junior Bross Miller and sophomore LJ Groenewald in the 3200 earning first place honors. The Lancers had six other Sectional qualifiers in Seniors Pernell Garner, Malik Hampton, Reed, and freshman David Marshall in the 4×400, Garner, Hampton, junior Alex Wildt and Marshall in the 4×200, and Garner, Wildt, Marshall and freshman Zakaylen Jones in the 4×100. Malek also qualified in the 1600. The last two event qualifiers were senior Sam Manson in the long jump and senior Vance Lear in the javelin.

Boys Volleyball: On Senior Night May 10, the Lancers swept Summit, 3-0. On May 13, the Lancers beat Francis Howell Central, 3-0. The Lancers didn’t let Spartans score more than 18 points in any set and this victory marked the team’s 20th win of the season bringing their record to 20-7. On May 17, the Lancers started their District play with a game against the Marquette Mustangs. The Lancers beat Marquette 3-2 in the semi-finals and then on May 18 lost to Kirkwood 3-0. The next game will be the quarter-finals on Friday, May 21 at home.

Girls Water Polo: On May 12, the Lady Lancers lost to Oakville, 17-6 ending their season.
