Lafayette girls swimming is having a strong season so far. Last year, the team finished as District runner-ups and State champions. Regarding this season, the girls have positive views on their upcoming meets.

Sophomore Claire Van Biljon is expecting to make it to Districts, but she also hopes for more overall team improvement before then.

Junior Katie Locke says the team is doing very well, but they haven’t reached their peak yet. Quite a few girls have qualified for State and a few more are expected to get their State cuts soon.

The team has won all of their dual meets, and according to VanBiljon, the Lafayette 400-meter free relays are looking strong this season.

In addition to competing in the pool together, the girls also spend time together outside of the pool as friends. The team has done several group activities such as ice skating and bowling to become closer teammates going into the postseason.

“When we get close we tend to want to win for one another which usually results in better swims,” Locke said.

The Lady Lancer’s next meet is on Jan. 12 at 4:15 p.m. and Jan. 13 at 8:30 a.m. at Kirkwood High School.
