Junior Varsity Boys Basketball Coach Don Kreienkamp will become the new boys basketball head coach starting at the 2024-2025 season. His new position is still pending board approval June 6, 2024.
Bryan Keim was the Former Head Coach of the boys basketball team.
“Keim was a really good coach. He brought a competitive nature to the team,” Junior Will Staggs, a member of the varsity boys basketball team, said, “He was my coach for all three years, he really knew my playstyle.”
Junior Patrick Boyette who is also on the varsity basketball team, is excited to see what Coach Kreienkamp will do differently than Former Coach Keim.
“The new playbook will be interesting to see, [so will] the new style of basketball he implements,” Boyette said.
Kreienkamp hopes that he has a smooth transition to head coach.
“I have been involved with the program for 17 years, and I feel confident that I understand what the daily ins and outs require,” Kreienkamp said. “There is always going to be things that I didn’t realize a head coach did, and I look forward to finding out those things.”
Although he is a basketball coach, Kreienkamp is also the Assistant Varsity Baseball coach.
“Right now I am focused on baseball. Once that season ends, it will be time to turn the page, get in the gym and start getting connected with the kids,” Kreienkamp said, “I am excited to get to work.”
The swim and dive teams will also have a new head coach as current Head Coach Todd Gabel is leaving the position.
Boys and girls swim and dive Assistant Coach Nate Kortuem will become the new head coach starting at the 2024-2025 season. His new position is also pending board approval June 6, 2024.
Kortuem says being a head coach comes with a lot of rewarding, hard work.
“As an assistant you take part in that process but the sole responsibility is on the head coach to set the standards for the program’s success,” Kortuem said.
Kortuem also wants to create a culture of success as head coach.
“The swimming and diving programs at Lafayette have a history of being one of the best programs in the state. I am excited to have the chance to add to this success,” Kortuem said, “I am excited to continue to build a culture of success at Lafayette High School.”
Activities Director Jonathan Sumner is happy to see these two sports perform next year.
“I look forward to seeing our new head coaches work with their programs to build upon the established culture and success of our programs,” he said.
