Social Studies teacher Steve Klawiter will have his AP World History class take the digital exam this May. He said he looks forward to seeing how his students will perform on the exam. “Its been very clear theyre moving towards digital. Since the pandemic started, theyve been putting the pieces in place to go digital, Klawiter said. “I think that ultimately it’s going to be more beneficial because with systems like Canvas and Google Classroom, students are used to more digital activities and less handwriting activities.”

Academic planner course selections open, close Feb. 9

In the Guidance Office, school counselor Stephanie Mullins and junior CJ Woode review Woode’s academic plan. Mullins said that after the first week of February, only counselors can alter students’ academic planners, but students are able to request changes.

With the introduction of the academic planner on Infinite Campus, the way students select their schedules for upcoming years has changed. While students are still required to select 14 semester’s worth of courses, students now have the opportunity to plan more than a year in advance and view past years’ courses all in one place.

Students should make their course selections in the academic planner before it closes at 4 p.m. Feb. 9.

Although counselors have already met with freshmen and sophomores, school counselor Stephanie Mullins said not every student will get a chance to do so before the course selection deadline.

“[Students] will put in their course requests. If they’re wrong it doesn’t matter,” Mullins said. “Once the deadline has happened, we will visit homerooms, we will ask to meet with kids individually and we will review next year with them.”

Due to the recent release of the academic planner, Mullins said there are still some finer details that need to be worked out. Students are able to submit incomplete schedules or select courses they have not completed the prerequisite for. While students may get a notification that their schedule is incomplete, it will still allow them to submit it.

However, Mullins said that any mistakes can be fixed by contacting your counselor through email or setting up an in-person appointment.

Another issue is the lack of summer course options on the academic planner. Mullins said the counseling office hopes to get more information on summer enrollment before homeroom meetings take place.

“I don’t want kids to worry too much that they have to know for sure what they are going to take,” Mullins said. “We’re going to make changes [to the schedule], we’re just [asking students] to go with their gut right now to get preliminary numbers.”
